Summary

As part of a World Bank initiative to promote rural electrification in Ethiopia, TERI had organized a training programme on rural electrification for senior officials from the Ministry of Water, Irrigation, and Energy (MoWIE), Ethiopia, from October 27 to November 11, 2014 at the TERI Gram. A group of 10 officials from the Ministry had attended the training programme, which focused on the techno-commercial aspects of rural electrification. On technological front, the training focused on measurement of solar radiations, standards and quality, and planning and designing of off-grid systems. While on commercial front, it focused on political framework, rural electricity franchise model, and financing & tariff for rural electrification. Besides, the participants were introduced to the use of various software systems; for example, Hybrid Optimization Model for Electric Renewables (HOMER), Renewable Energy Project Analysis Software (RETScreen), and Photovoltaic software (PVsyst). The programme was supplemented by two field visits to Yamuna Nagar and Odisha wherein the participants got an opportunity to see Biomass Gasifier and Solar PV systems (i.e., solar charging station, solar micro grid AC & DC, and solar multi-utility centre), respectively.
